چکیده
Biological systems display a high degree of flexibility in problem solving. In this paper a model is presented, Distributed Adaptive Control III (DACIII), which is aimed at understanding these forms of behavior. DACIII is part of a larger modeling series directed at understanding how biological systems acquire, retain, and express knowledge of the world. This modeling series has its roots, on one hand, in the methodological consideration that brain and behavior need to be modeled from a multi-level perspective. On the other, the importance of the acquisition of representations of events in the world, as opposed to an a priori specification, is emphasized. DACIII is presented against the background of the paradigms of classical and operant conditioning. On the basis of an analysis of these experimental approaches towards the study of animal behavior a theoretical framework is defined aimed at identifying the minimal requirements of a control structure which could display these behaviors. The proposed model is evaluated in different configurations using both simulated and real robots. It is demonstrated that DACIII is able to fully bootstrap itself from a mode of control which solely relies on proximal sensors and predefined reflexes, to a level of control which is dominated by acquired representations of events transduced by distal sensors. This transition is reflected in the performance of the behaving device, from strongly variable trajectories to highly structured behavioral sequences. The results are compared with alternative models of classical and operant conditioning and models which attempt to capture the properties of its underlying neural substrate. q 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. متن کاملConstrained neural approaches to quadratic assignment problems
In this paper, we discuss analog neural approaches to the quadratic assignment problem (QAP). These approaches employ a hard constraints scheme to restrict the domain space, and are able to obtain much improved solutions over conventional neural approaches. Since only a few strong heuristics for QAP have been known to date, our approaches are good alternatives, capable of obtaining fairly good ...

An analog MOS circuit is proposed for implementing a Lotka–Volterra (LV) competitive neural network which produces winners-shareall solutions. The solutions give multiple winners receiving large inputs and are particularly useful for selecting a set of inputs through ‘‘decision by majority’’. We show that the LV network can easily be implemented using subthreshold MOS transistors. Results of ex...
متن کاملExplanation of the "virtual input" phenomenon
We write this letter to comment on the "virtual input" phenomenon reported by Thaler (Neural Networks, 8(1) (1995) 55-65). The author attributed the phenomenon to the network's ability to perform pattern classification and completion, and reported that pruning probability affects the number of virtual inputs observed. Our independent study of Thaler's results, however, reveals a simpler explana...
متن کاملParallel and robust skeletonization built on self-organizing elements
A massively parallel neural architecture is suggested for the approximate computation of the skeleton of a planar shape. Numerical examples demonstrate the robustness of the method. The architecture is constructed from self-organizing elements that allow the extension of the concept of skeletonization to areas remote to image processing.
